Overview

We are seeking a special person as the face of the business to help provide our clients with a wonderful experience, quality information and entertainment mainly on our guided overnight hikes on the Rakiura Great Walk in Stewart Island. Some possible day trips on Ulva Island and local Stewart Island Walks.  Opportunities and responsibilities will be based on the applicants skills and aptitude.

In order to meet customer needs and help the business move forward, we require a commitment for a minimum 2 to 3 year period to allow you to build up your expertise and knowledge.

Required from early October 2018 for training and working through to April / early May 2019, with additional seasons for the right person.

Stewart Island is a semi-remote location with a daily flight and ferry service and a number of amenities / facilities. There are about 400 permanent residents and over 35,000 visitors a year.

Our ideal candidate is / has:

  • Birdwatching skill and a good understanding of native New Zealand birds and plants and a willingness to learn about our natural environment and cultural history
  • A good fit for a small, professional working environment
  • Flexibility as we are a small business and our trips are based on customer demand
  • Tertiary qualification in an appropriate outdoors field e.g. geography, zoology
  • Hiking experience. Any guiding experience is an advantage.
  • Mature, responsible, honest and trustworthy,
  • Friendly and outgoing with strong customer service skills
  • Good leadership and organisation skills
  • Excellent communication skills, written and spoken English
  • Physically strong, healthy and fit.
  • Good cooking and food presentation skills
  • Good personal presentation

Duties include:

Guide Overnight Trips

  • Plan and prepare for trips
  • Brief clients / answer questions
  • Guiding clients and provide assistance as required
  • Providing quality information and experiences
  • Entertain clients
  • Supervise any support staff / trainees
  • Load and unload boat and transfer gear to / from huts
  • Prepare and serve meals / snacks
  • Cleaning / packing

Guide Day or Evening / Night Trips

  • Plan and prepare for trips
  • Guide clients
  • Provide quality information and experience
  • Prepare and serve meals and snacks
  • Cleaning

Driver Guide on Scenic Road Tours

  • Drive clients and provide quality information
  • Entertain clients
  • General
  • Maintaining timely and accurate records of trips and other administrative needs
  • Carry out any other reasonable tasks helpful to the business.

Employment Period and Hours of Work

  • October to April / Mid-May 2019
  • Working hours will vary from minimum 30 hours to 40+ hours a week.

  • Are in New Zealand or planning to visit and hold or will hold a valid NZ work visa
  • Hold a current first aid certificate
  • Hold a clean driver’s licence (if possible an NZ driver’s licence with a p-endorsement).  Priority will be given to applicants with a New Zealand driver’s licences and passenger endorsement or able and willing to obtain.
  • Have no commitments that require extended leave during the period October to April / May.
