A fantastic opportunity for the right candidate/s to join Ruggedy Range™ Wilderness Experience, a unique nature tourism business located and operating in Stewart Island, for the coming season from September / October 2017 to April / May 2018.

There are 2 vacancies:

  1. Nature and Birdwatching Guide
  2. Support Guide

Employment hours are based on demand from customers and additional work may be available, subject to suitability and needs of the business.

We are small and expect all staff members to work as a team and contribute towards our goals, values, and ongoing successes.  It is important that you have no commitments that take you away from available work during our tourist season. As a result you will get the opportunity to visit some special places, providing you with valuable hands-on experience.

VACANCY 1: NATURE AND BIRDWATCHING GUIDE

We are seeking an outstanding person to help provide our clients with a wonderful experience, quality information and entertainment.  As the face of the business the suitable candidate must be friendly and outgoing, with strong customer service skills, good leadership, communication and organisational skills, with a high level of personal presentation.  The successful candidate must be physically fit.

Guide Overnight Trips:

  • Plan and prepare for trips
  • Brief clients / answer questions
  • Guiding clients and provide assistance as required
  • Providing quality information and experiences
  • Entertain clients
  • Supervise any support staff / trainees
  • Load and unload boat and transfer gear to / from huts
  • Prepare and serve meals / snacks
  • Cleaning / packing

Guide Day Trips:

  • Plan and prepare for trips
  • Guide clients
  • Provide quality information and experience
  • Prepare and serve meals and snacks
  • Cleaning

Skills Required

  • Tertiary qualification in an appropriate outdoors field e.g. geography, zoology
  • Birdwatching skills and knowledge / experience of NZ birds
  • Trekking experience.  Any guiding experience would be an advantage.
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Current Outdoor First Aid Certificate
  • Clean driver’s licence (P-endorsement would be ideal)
  • Ability to cook and present meals to at least a good standard

VACANCY 2: SUPPORT GUIDE

The suitable candidate must be friendly and outgoing with good communication skills and a good standard of personal presentation, willing to assist the lead guide and clients as required to ensure our clients receive the best possible experience and successful outcomes for the business. The successful candidate must be physically fit.

This person will assist the lead guide on overnight trips:

  • Prepare for overnight trips
  • Help carrying gear to and from boat and transfer gear to / from huts
  • Help prepare and serve meals and snacks
  • Entertain clients
  • Cleaning / packing
  • Assisting clients on their walks
  • Helping customers on their walks (including carrying gear if required

Supporting Lead guide on day trips (if required):

  • Assisting clients on short walks (if required)
  • Preparing and serving meals / snacks
  • Cleaning / packing
  • Carrying gear to and from boat and guiding sites.

Skills Required

 

  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Clean driver’s licence (P-endorsement would be ideal)
  • Good organisational skills
  • Ability to cook well
