About Us

Taranaki Outdoor Pursuits and Education Centre delivers high-quality experiential outdoor education at. We work with primary, secondary, and tertiary students, providing meaningful learning experiences that connect people to place, challenge comfort zones, and build resilience.

Located beneath the iconic slopes of Mount Taranaki and alongside the rugged coastline of Taranaki Coast, our environment is both our classroom and our inspiration.

The Role

We are seeking a Full-Time Outdoor Instructor with experience working across a range of age groups, including:

  • Primary school students
  • Secondary school students (including NCEA programmes)
  • Year-long tertiary outdoor education programmes
  • You will facilitate engaging, student-centred outdoor learning experiences that promote:
  • Personal growth and leadership
  • Environmental sustainability
  • Practical outdoor skills
  • Curriculum-linked achievement (including NCEA standards)

Person specifications:

  • Experienced in outdoor instruction and group facilitation, NZOIA or equivalent qualifications are preferred but not necessary
  • Confident working with diverse age groups
  • Passionate about experiential education and environmental stewardship
  • Safety-focused with strong risk management skills
  • Energetic, adaptable, and enthusiastic about coastal and mountain environments

About Taranaki Outdoor Pursuits and Education Centre

Taranaki Outdoor Pursuits and Education Centre (TOPEC) is managed by the TOPEC Trust and is a registered charity, set up by Taranaki Secondary Schools and Service groups.

​Our staff are amongst the most experienced, committed, and competent outdoor enthusiasts. The location, facilities, and specialist equipment here at TOPEC allow for us to provide experiences that exceed expectations.

​School courses are created to meet classroom-needs and include; residential programmes, NCEA courses, the Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award and secondary-tertiary NZ Certificate courses are just some of the offerings available at TOPEC. There are also options for primary school residential, river or bush safety programmes; as well as private hiring of facilities.

​Our centre is located on the banks of the Waiwhakaiho River, just outside of Ngamotu, New Plymouth, and is situated in an area that allows us to make the most of the taonga of Taranaki - the sea, rivers, bush and iconic Taranaki Maunga.
